601,050. Compound sheet materials. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and BINGEN, E. A. April 21, 1944, No. 27292. Divided out of 586,028. A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 11, 1946. [Class 140] Resinous plastic sheets which do not adhere readily to one another are united by coating one sheet with a water-insoluble plasticiser and, simultaneously or subsequently, with a composition containing a liquid polysilicic acid sol and a volatile organic solvent for both the plasticiser and the sol, the coating having a pH value of less than 1.5, applying the other sheet to the coated surface while still wet with solvent, and hot-pressing to unite the sheets. When the plasticiser is applied first it may be in the form of a solution of highly plasticised polymethyl methacrylate. The sheets to be united may be of natural resin, modified natural resin, or synthetic resin. A sheet of polyvinyl acetal resin, e.g. the butyral, may be united to one or two outer sheets of a polymerised methacrylic or acrylic compound, e.g. the methyl, ethyl, propyl or other ester, the anhydride, or the acid. In examples (1) two sheets of polymethyl methacrylate are coated on one side with a composition containing tetraethyl silicate, ethyl alcohol, dimethyl phthalate, and hydrochloric acid, a sheet of polyvinyl butyral resin plasticised with dibutyl phthalate is placed between the coated surfaces, and the assembly hotpressed at 140‹C (2) as in (1) but the adhesive contains dimethyl phthalate, polysilicic acid sol (20 per cent sol in butanol), ethyl alcohol and hydrochloric acid, and the polyvinyl butyral sheet is plasticised with dibutyl sebacate. The assembly is placed between glass sheets in a rubber bag which is evacuated and subjected to oil pressure in an autoclave. The formed sheet was softened and bent into semi-cylindrical shape. The plasticiser in the adhesive coating may be diethyl or di-methoxyethyl phthalate, dimethyl azelate, di-methoxyethyl adipate, or dimethyl sebacate. Alcohols, ketones, esters of organic or inorganic acids, ethers, amides, or organic acids are suitable solvents, acetone, nbutanol, and tributyl phosphate being specified.
