Abstract

The surface of aluminium is coated with an adherent layer comprising polyvinyl butyral, followed by adherent layers of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether and of a lower aliphatic ester of cellulose. The polyvinyl butyral is applied from a solution which may also contain small proportions of phosphoric acid and of curing agents such as phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resin-forming condensation products. The remaining layers may also be applied as solutions, with intermediate drying. The cellulose ester solution may contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, nacreous materials, fire retardants, ultra-violet light absorbents, and other modifiers. A sheet of solid plasticized cellulose ester may be applied to the cellulose ester coating while it is still tacky, and caused to adhere thereto. Or, the aluminium surface may be coated with the polyvinyl butyral and a cellulose ester sheet coated with a copolymer of maleic anhydride and alkyl vinyl ether applied thereto, and after drying, the surfaces are bonded together under heat and pressure. The invention may be applied to flexible foils, rigid sheets or other articles of aluminium. The cellulose ester coating may receive printing or other indicia, may be chemically modified as by saponification, or may act as a support for additional layers.
