Abstract
648,812. Coated fabrics ; compound sheet materials. SYLVANIA INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION. April 17, 1946, No. 11766. Convention date, May 18, 1945. [Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] Surfaces, e.g. of paper, fabric and felt, are coated by means of a composite transfer sheet made by applying to a smooth, non-fibrous surface of a temporary backing a layer of a liquid monomeric or partially polymerized or partially condensed resin-forming organic compound free from volatile solvents, heating to form a solid thermoplastic film which has a softening point than the surface of the backing, does not adhere permanently thereto and is releasable to another surface under heat and pressure, adhering the film to a surface to be coated, and stripping off the backing. Suitable liquids are allyl alcohol and its derivatives, furfural, furfuryl alcohol, acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, e.g. ethyl acrylate, methyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, methoxyethyl, ethoxyethyl, butoxyethoxy and cyclohexyl methacrylates, vinyl alcohol derivatives, coumarone, indene, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethyl ether, heptylenes, octylenes and mixtures thereof ; partially polymerized coumarone-indene resins and partially condensed phenol-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, phenol-furfural and alkyd resins. The liquid may contain polymerization catalysts and plasticizers, e.g. soft alkyd resins, dibutyl phthalate and paraffin wax. The backing sheet may be of metal, hydrophilic film-forming materials, e.g. regenerated cellulose, alkali soluble cellulose ethers, gelatine, casein, denitrated nitrocellulose, deacetylated chitin and zein, or paper, fabric or felt surfaced therewith ; hydrophobic film-forming materials such as unplasticized cellulose esters and ethers, high melting-point thermoplastic or thermosetting resins, e.g. phenol-aldehyde, urea-aldehyde, urea-aldehyde-alcohol ethers, melamine-aldehyde and sulphonamide-aldehyde resins, or paper, felt or fabric coated therewith. The transfer film may be applied to the surface to be coated by heated platens, calender rolls or blanket-roll presses at temperatures between 50‹ and 160‹ C. and pressures between 5 and 450 lbs. per square inch. After stripping, the film may be polished, decorated, embossed or coated. The products may be used for making raincoats. Examples describe polymerizing (1) methyl methacrylate, which may contain polymethyl methacrylate, on a backing sheet of regenerated cellulose and transferring to paper ; (2) a mixture of ethyl acrylate and vinyl acetate on kraft paper coated with a ureaformaldehyde-butylene-ether resin and transferring to fabric ; (3) a liquid phenol-furfural resin on an endless aluminium band and transferring to nylon fabric.
