600,791. Change-speed and reversing gearing ; friction clutches. SOC. D'APPLlCATION DES BREVETS COTAL. July 23, 1945, No. 18837. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] A marine or other reversing or combined change-speed and reversing gearing provided with electromagnetically-operated plate clutches and brakes has friction rings or surfaces of the kind described in Specifications 591,091 and 598,968 mounted on the coacting faces of the clutches and brakes. As shown, the gearing is of the kind described. in Specification 600,790, comprising in series an epicyclic reversing- gearing 8 having an armature 7 coacting with rotating and fixed electromagnets 3, 9 respectively, and an epicyclic two-speed gear 11 having an armature 13 coacting with rotating and fixed electromagnets 12, 15 respectively. Highly polished friction rings 17 ... 22 are mounted on the peripheries of the magnets and armatures, one of each coacting pair being of hard steel and the other of bronze or some other metal giving similar friction characteristics. The rings may be disposed at any other position on the coacting faces of the magnets and armatures, and one or both of each coacting pair of rings may be replaced by a portion of the actual face which has been subjected to heat or chemical treatment or to extra-metallic deposition. The opposite faces of each armature may diverge outwards as shown. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the two-speed gearing is dispensed with. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 602,803.
