Abstract

600,630. Refractory bricks. HEUER, R. P. June 26, 1945, No. 16261. [Classes 51(i) and 51(ii)] [Also in Group V] An unburnt refractory brick is prepared from a refractory substance by moulding under pressure and provided with an insert having a formation suitable for engagement with a supporting member or hanger in a furnace, this insert being embedded in the refractory substance during the moulding of the brick, the refractory substance and the insert being enclosed on all sides in the mould at the completion of the moulding. Fig. 2 shows a brick with a metallic U-shaped insert 8 having wings 13 and corresponding recesses 14 co-operating with the refractory, the recess 32 enabling the bricks to be suspended in pairs from an inverted T-shaped hanger. Part of a furnace arch showing this construction is seen in Fig. 14, hangers 46 being suspended from bars 48 in hooks 50 attached to overhead girders 49. The inserts may be offset in the bricks enabling a curved arch to be advantageously constructed, Fig. 12 (not shown), and said inserts may be of a variety of shapes e.g. Y-shaped. Specifications 600,649 and 600,650 show the walls and roof of an open hearth furnace uptake and a suspended furnace roof respectively, constructed according to this invention. The bricks are moulded (see Group V) under a pressure of 1,500-10,000 pounds per square inch and a suitable mixture is:- Chrome ore 6 x 28 mesh ...... 60% Dead-burnt Magnesite 50 mesh 40% or Chrome ore (coarse grains) 6 x 28 mesh ........................ 60% Magnesia (Periclose)fine grains 65 mesh ........................ 40% To both these mixtures a binder of 2 per .cent air floated kaolin and a solution of sulphuric acid to give a total content of 4 per cent water and 1 per cent acid is added.
