An unburnt basic refractory brick made of magnesia or a chromite/magnesia mixture containing at least 10 per cent magnesia has an external oxidizable iron or steel plate extending over one or more faces and attached during moulding of the brick, and an internal oxidizable iron or steel plate disposed perpendicularly to the external plate for part of the distance across the brick and extending either substantially for the full length thereof, or leaving a length at the cold end without internal plates not more than 20 per cent of the length of the brick. The invention is shown applied to the suspended roof (Fig. 1) of an open-hearth or like furnace, in which the bricks 31 disposed between skewbacks 32 are suspended by hangers 26 from arcuate members 25. Each brick 31 (Figs. 4 and 6) has a pair of steel plates 38 with vertical fins 37 and formed with tabs 41 inserted on opposite faces of the brick during moulding. Hanger recesses 30 are also formed in the brick, the plates being also recessed to suit, if necessary. A modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), has two vertical fins forming the internal oxidizable flats, and the external plate may have one or two side flanges, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown). Loose plates or wire gauze, preferably terminating several inches from the hot end faces, may be inserted along radial joints in a furnace arched roof, and the space below these plates &c. may be filled by sheets of paper, cardboard or asbestos cemented to the radial surfaces of the bricks.
