Abstract
600,007. Making nuts. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 6, 1944, No. 6482. Convention date, April 6, 1943. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] An anchor nut with a fibre locking insert 13, Fig. 4, is made from a sheet metal blank by a series of cupping, stamping and trimming operations and in one form of machine the blank is moved from station to station by a series of horizontally movable fingers from which it is transferred to the die by the punch and to which it is returned from the die by an ejector. Forging-dics and punches.-In the formation of the seat for the insert, the blank is received by spring-supported jaws 23, Fig. 5, caused to close in on the neck by the punch 21 forcing them down against cam surfaces. The punch has a centring pilot 22 that supports the part to be threaded against flow produced by the punch P that has a coned end 25 to form the bevel 19, a short cylindrical section 27 to form the lip, a shoulder 30 to form the top edge of the neck and recesses 29 to form the projections 17. The recesses are sufficiently numerous to prevent fracture of the punch by the flow of metal during forging.
