916,472. Making earth working discs; stamping; bending; rolling. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. June 24, 1960, No. 22235/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of making a sheet metal agricultural disc 13, Fig. 5a, a flat disc blank 16, Fig. 4a, is first flanged at 15 to an acute angle and then sheared at the peripheral lip along a substantially cylindrical surface to form a tapered cutting edge 17, the blank finally being reshaped to a spherical curvature. The peripheral edge of the flat blank may be tapered between rolls 23, 24, Fig. 6a, or may have flanges 15, Fig. 9, simultaneously formed with the tapering by engaging the edge of the blanks between correspondingly shaped driven rolls 74, 75. In other examples, a blank 11, Fig. 11, is flanged over an annular former 82 by a spring-loaded former 91 having a concentric shearing ring 89 which subsequently descends to shear the peripheral lip. The blank may then be moved to a second machine for forming to spherical curvature or may be engaged by a second central former 83 actuated upwardly by plungers 85. Ejector pins (not shown) may finally remove the disc from the former 83.
