Abstract

599,078. Sheet-delivery apparatus. HOE & CO., Ltd., R., TURRALL, G., and SKINNER, C. H. March 3, 1945, No. 5358. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] To deliver printed or like products in counted batches, the products leaving a machine are directed in counted batches alternately to two continuously-travelling batch supports, accelerated while on the supports to separate the batches in the direction of movement, and finally delivered from the supports to a single endless conveyer moving continuously at the speed of the accelerated batches. In one construction, Fig. 1, the stream of sheets leaving rollers 2, 3, are guided into a horizontal path by a member 8, before they reach the deflector 10 which diverts the alternate batches to conveyers 21, 22. The batches are accelerated by further conveyers 23, 24, which deliver them to a high-speed conveyer 28<1> in a single stream but with the batches separated from one another. Instead of using conveyers 23, 24, the conveyers 21, 22, may be driven by variable-speed gearing so as to accelerate each batch after it is formed. Co-operating with the conveyers are endless bands 29, 30, each of which has a resiliently-mounted guide roller 32 so as to yield in the event of a jam. The rollers carrying the conveyers 21, 22, and bands 29, 30, are mounted on frames 35, 39, 49, adjusted by screw mechanism 36, 41, 43, 47. A box-cam driven from the machine operates the deflector 10 through lever mechanism. In a modified construction, Fig. 5, separate batch supports 66 guided in an endless path are provided and are normally driven by lugs 67<1> on constant-speed chains engaging lugs 66<2> on the supports. Adjacent to the delivery end, other lugs on the supports are engaged by lugs 68<1> on faster-moving chains 68 to impart the required acceleration to the batches. To control the delivery of the sheets to the conveyer 21, rotary discs 56 with curved slots 57 in their periphery are provided, the front edge of each sheet entering the slots before being deposited on the conveyer.
