Abstract
598,892. Servomotors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WELSH, R. J. March 2, 1944, No. 3904. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] Power plant having a prime mover, such as a turbine 18, supplied with motive fluid from an internal-combustion engine-driven compressor, preferably of the floating piston type 1, has means responsive to the pressure of the motive fluid adapted to regulate the output of the gas generator to maintain the pressure in the manifold 17 constant during predetermined loading conditions for the prime mover 18. An orifice 20 allows restricted communication between the manifold 17 and a cylinder 19. Increase in pressure in 17, and thus 19, acts on a piston 22 to cause a fuel rack 10a to decrease the supply to the generator cylinder. A number of generators may be coupled up to the turbine, having motive fluid supply pipes 44, and fuel control links 45. A leak-off valve 21 may be moved by hand, e.g. by the operator of a vehicle driven by the prime mover. The piston 22 may act through another servomotor system on the link 29. The servomotor piston may vary the fuel supply while means responsive to the stroke of the free pistons vary the volumetric efficiency of the compressor, e.g. by actuating a throttle valve at the inlet 14 to the compressor as described in Specification 586,989, [Group XXVI]. Alternatively, the motion of the inlet throttle and of the fuel rack may bE co-ordinated as described in Specification 598, 530, [Group XXVI]. The piston 22 may control the output of the gas generator otherwise than act ing on the fuel rack. Ir Fig. 2, the position of the valve 21 is controlled by a speed governor 31 through a spring 38 and a rocking lever 39. On a decrease in speed of the turbine 18, the governor moves a valve 33 to apply pressure to a piston 36, which increases the opening of the valve 21 to lower the pressure in 19. The spring 23 accordingly moves the piston 22 to cause an increase in the fuel supply 10a, until the pressure in 17 is increased and the speed of the turbine has increased. The opening movement of valve 21 will have decreased the force exerted by the governor loading spring 38 so that the speed at which equilibrium is restored is slightly less than the previous steady speed. In Fig. 3, the lever 39 moves about a pivot 40 by a piston 41 under pressure of the fluid in the conduit 17, to decrease the loading on the spring 38 with an increase in pressure of the fluid. The engine may operate on the twostroke, compression-ignition principle.
