Abstract

Vegetable matter is prepared for use in making moulded articles by submitting it to the action of a halogen other than fluorine and particularly chlorine, removing wholly or in part adsorbed or loosely combined halogen or halogen compounds by treatment with hot air, dry steam or weak alkali, followed by drying, grinding and sieving the resultant product, which is then moulded under heat and pressure, with or without addition of binders, plasticisers, lubricants, accelerators and dyes (see Group V). The preferred method of treating the vegetable matter with halogen is by passing gaseous chlorine, pure or mixed with air, through the material contained in a tower or series of towers or by injecting the gas into a vessel filled with raw materials. The vegetable material may be sawdust, wood-shavings, flax shives, sisal flesh, peat, or waste paper.ALSO:Moulded articles are prepared from vegetable matter by submitting it to the action of a halogen, other than fluorine, and particularly chlorine, removing wholly or in part adsorbed or loosely combined halogen or halogen compounds by treatment with hot air, dry steam or weak alkali, followed by drying, grinding and sieving the resultant product and moulding under heat and pressure. Binders, e.g., artificial resins and waxes, plasticisers, e.g., hexamine, lubricants, e.g., zinc stearate, accelerators such as triphenylphosphate or dyes such as nigrosine may be added. The vegetable matter used may be in its green or dried state and partially or wholly decomposed as, e.g., waste paper, leaf mould and peat. The preferred method of treating the vegetable matter with halogen is by passing gaseous chlorine, pure or mixed with air through the material contained in a tower or series of towers or by injecting the gas into a vessel filled with raw materials.
