Abstract
An aqueous solution for treating boiler feedwater contains an alkali metal carbonate or an alkaline phosphate, a tanning extract or similar organic substance, and caustic alkali, and the preparation of the solution consists in adding the organic substance by instalments to an aqueous solution of the caustic alkali and heating the solution for a time, usually about an hour, before mixing with the alkali metal carbonate or the alkaline phosphate. The caustic alkali solution contains from 7.5 to 20 per cent by weight of alkali, the number of instalments of organic substance and intervals of time between instalments depend upon the ellagic content thereof, and the heat treatment at a temperature not less than 60 DEG C. and preferably at or near the boiling point of the solution is for a time sufficient to prevent precipitates forming in the liquid eventually prepared.
