Abstract

Asbestos fibres and products produced therefrom containing organic substances which are not removable by water washing are contacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate or phosphate and then washed with water. The contacting is preferably carried out under such conditions of time and temperature as to remove substantially all of said waterresistant organic substances, the temperature preferably being between room temperature and the boiling point of the mixture. Preferably the silicate or phosphate solution has a concentration of less than 10%. The silicates that may be used have the formula (Me2O)x(SiO2)y where x is 1 or 2, y is from 1 to 4 or greater and Me is a monovalent alkali metal atom. Phosphates which may be used are ortho and polyphosphates, e.g. primary, secondary and tertiary alkali metal salts, e.g. mono-, di- or tri-salts of monophosphates; Na2H2P2O7; Na3HP2O7; Na4P2O7; Na5P3O10; (NaPo3)x. Mixtures may also be used, e.g. "Calgon" (Registered Trade Mark).
