Description

Process for removing scale It is known that one. Scale in some cases by treating with aqueous solutions of acids or can remove alkaline substances such as soda, dilute caustic soda, etc. However, these means are not generally applicable, so a complete removal of scale is not possible in this way. It has now been found that one You can remove scale with safety and in one go if you can in the garden with appropriately concentrated solutions of alkali hydroxides, if necessary can be provided with additives to prevent lye brittleness, treated. It is recommended that the solution act on the scale at the boiling point permit. The duration of treatment depends on the nature of the scale, the concentration of the lye and the temperature. In a boiling sodium hydroxide solution The usual dissolves, partly from plaster of paris, partly from calcium carbonate and silicates existing scale after 3 to hours. A chemical attack on iron does not take place. Once the lye has been used, the lime sludge can be removed be used over and over again, if necessary with occasional re-concentration. It may be advisable to carry out the treatment under pressure, in particular if you work with more dilute alkalis or if for other reasons higher Temperatures are desired.

A sample of scale of approximate composition 29.0% S O3, 44, o% Ca O, 2.5% Mg O, 18.5% C02, 1.8% S102, 0.3% A1203 + Fe203 and 2.5% Water was refluxed with 5o% sodium hydroxide solution for 3 hours. After this Cooling down, the scale had disintegrated into a fine sludge. The liquor possessed after filtering off the sludge still a content of 490/0 NaOH.

Example 2 A piece of iron pipe encrusted with scale was made Boiled for 6 hours with 400% sodium hydroxide solution on a reflux condenser. After this Treatment, the scale had completely loosened from the iron and was partly Remove from the container as sludge, sometimes as shells, by rinsing. example 3 Another scale-encrusted piece of iron pipe was used for 8 hours heated in a 2oo% sodium hydroxide solution to 190 to 200 ° under 10 atmospheric pressure. Even here was without any mechanical treatment after the end of the experiment the scale completely detached from the iron.
