Process for the preparation of solid ammonium formate.

If calcium formate is reacted with ammonium carbonate in the presence of water, ammonium formate solutions containing calcium formate are obtained. According to the process described in German patent specification No. 381957, pure ammonium formate is obtained from such impure formate solutions in such a way that the amount of oxalic acid ammonium corresponding to the amount of calcium formate still present is added to precipitate the lime. In order to be able to obtain solid salt from such lime-free ammonium formate solutions, these naturally have to be evaporated; However, it must be taken into account here that aqueous ammonium formate solutions partially decompose during evaporation.

It has now been found that solid ammonium formate, which is practically free of eagle formate, is obtained immediately if the reaction of calcium formate with ammonium carbonate or with ammonia and carbon dioxide is carried out in a cold saturated ammonium formate solution, then the solution freed from the precipitated calcium carbonate is deeply cooled and that in solid form precipitated ammonium formate separates from the mother liquor. The latter can be used again as a batch liquid for a new reaction.

Example: In 500 g of an ammonium formate solution saturated at -10 C, containing about 48% ammonium formate, about 130 g of calcium formate are added, then about 35 g of ammonia gas and then 46 g of carbon dioxide are introduced with stirring at 40 ° C. The reaction mixture is heated to 60 ° C., stirred for two and a half hours and filtered on a suction filter, 510 g of filtrate being obtained. It still contains about 1.5 g of calcium formate or about 1% of the amount of calcium formate used and about 83% of the formic acid that was present in the batch. By washing out the residue with an amount of water corresponding to half the filtrate, the remainder up to about 1% can also be recovered.

The filtrate freed from calcium carbonate is then cooled to -10 ° C. with stirring and, after the ammonium formate has separated out, it is filtered off; the yield of solid ammonium formate is almost quantitative.
