Abstract

Cotton products are rendered resistant to attack by mildew-causing organisms by treatment with acrylonitrile in the form of vapour or of a homogeneous liquid mixture with water in the presence of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide containing not more than 10 per cent by weight of the alkali metal hydroxide, and at a temperature near the boiling point of acrylonitrile, for such time as to combine cyano-ethyl groups with the cotton in the proportion 0.1-0.6 and particularly 0.2-0.4 group per anhydro-glucose unit. In an example cotton fabric is steeped in a 2 per cent aqueous caustic soda solution for five minutes at room temperature, centrifuged to 100 per cent liquid retention, and passed through a chamber containing acrylonitrile vapour at the boiling point of acrylonitrile at a rate to give a 2.5 minute exposure period. The chamber is provided with a reflux condenser and a baffle to shield the fabric from the returning acrylonitrile condensate. The treated fabric is washed with hot water and dried. In two further examples cotton fabrics, after treatment as above with caustic soda, are immersed in a saturated solution of water in liquid acrylonitrile at about 74 DEG C. for one and five minutes respectively. Specification 640,411 and U.S.A. Specification 2,375,847 are referred to.
