Abstract
598,163. Variable-pitch propellers. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and FORSYTH, A. G. Dec. 13, 1945, No. 33827. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1944. [Class 114] The movements between coarse and fine pitch in a propeller of the type disclosed in Specification 597,931 are carried out by electric motor at reduced voltage, whereas reverse and feathering movements are quickly made by the added effects of the motor at full voltage and of shaft-driven gearing clutched in electrically. The main governor 84 closes either switches 85 or 86 to bring in the motor 23, this being supplied at reduced voltage from the battery 83 through resistances 87, 89. Sudden engine speed changes operate auxiliary governor 16 to close switches 81, 82, thus short-circuiting resistances 87, 89 and thus giving quicker pitch changes. Limit switches 65, 66 control the extent of these movements. Feathering or reversing movements are initiated by the hand lever 92, bringing in the magnetic clutches 9,4, 98 to operate engine shaft driven gearing and also to bring full voltage on to the motor 23. Switches 95, 99 limit the movements. In a, modification, the reverse limit switch can be adjusted in flight.
