580,745. Variable pitch propellers. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. Oct. 12, 1943, No. 16723. Convention date, Jan. 19. [Class 114] A self-contained unit for mounting on the propeller drive shaft 4 of an aircraft engine 2 comprises a housing 14 carrying a governor 96 driven by the engine for actuating switches or the like controlling a reversible electric or hydraulic motor 72 driving gearing for varying the pitch of the blades 37. Two such units may be applied to contra-rotating propellers mounted on coaxial drive shafts. In the form shown, the housing 14 has a flange 10 secured by nuts 12 and bolts 8 on a front facing 6 of the engine 2. Keyed to the shaft 4 is a ring member 16 to which the hub sleeve 20 is secured by a lock nut 28 and wedge collets 18, 22. The gearing includes a spider 58 continuously rotated in the same. direction by the shaft 4 but at a lower speed. The electric motor 72 is geared to a shaft 70 carrying a worm 68 which rotates a ring gear-wheel 66 which, through pinions 56, drives a large ring gear-wheel 52 geared to annular worm-wheels 38 for rotating the blades 37 about their longitudinal axes. The gear-wheel 66 also drives through a spur gear 108, a worm 110, and a worm-wheel 112, a shaft 114 carrying cams 80, 82, 84 which control switches of the regulating system described in Specification 564,221. The member 16 also carries worm teeth 118 which' engage a worm 120 on a shaft 122, one end of which drives the governor 96 whilst the other end drives a de-icing pump 124.
