Abstract
603,438. Variable-pitch propellers. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and FORSYTH, A. G. May 7, 1945, No. 11621. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXXV] The propeller assembly carries the stator coils f of an electric generator attached to the engine casing, and the armature h attached to the propeller boss through an electromagnetic coupling t, u. When this is open, and current is supplied from the battery 34 the relative movement of the rotor and armature alters the blade pitch through epicyclic gearing and worms 16. Direction and rate of movement are controlled by hand-operated switches 40, 42 and 41, and governor controller switches 35 and 36, the latter maintaining constant engine speed. Limit switches 23, 24, 25 and 26 operated by cams on the worm shafts limit movements for fine, coarse, feather and reverse pitch positions. An auxiliary governor 37 prevents "overrevving " or " under-revving " of the engine by sudden throttle movements by the pilot, by cutting-out resistances 53 or 56 to obtain quick pitch-change movements. The switch 33 controls output of the electrical device when this is used, with the electro-magnetic coupling closed so that it operates as a generator to supply heating coils in the propeller or electric power for the cabin.
