Abstract

1,090,110. Electric-correspondence control systems. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. Nov.10, 1965 [March 6, 1965], No. 47593/65. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G3] Means are provided for the electrical control of variable-pitch propellers or rudders. In one arrangement a ship is driven by a variable-pitch propeller which is, coupled to two diesel engines, the main ship's generators also being driven from the propeller shaft for operation at constant speed. The pitch-angle is adjusted by an hydraulic power amplifier having control lever 6 coupled to servomotor 20. Alternating voltages from master transmitter 9 and follow-up transmitter 11 are applied to rectifiers 13, 14, which produce a D. C. signal representing the deviation of the lever 6 from a set position. This signal is fed to trigger circuit 15 for controlling relays 16, 17, selectively in accordance with the sense of the deviation. The relays are associated with thyristors 18, 19 in circuit with the motor 20 which is driven in either direction to correct any positional error of control lever 6. Tachometer generator 23 monitors the speed of the propeller shaft and provides a signal for trigger circuit 15 if the speed falls below the value selected by resistor 31 which is connected to controller 24. The speed-signal modifies the positional-error signal whereby the pitch-angle is reduced for restoring the speed of the propeller-shaft to the nominal value. The signal from the controller 24 is applied to the trigger circuit 15 alternatively through relays 25 or 26, and rectifiers 27 or 28, these relays being controlled by contacts 29, 30, which are activated when transmitter 9 is moved from a central position. The system may be modified for double-rudder control, the rudders being slightly offset when in the central position, and this offset being eliminated at greater rudder angles. In this arrangement, the tachometer generator 23 is replaced by a transmitter which supplies a direct voltage representing the rudder position. This signal modifies the signal representing the deviation between the desired and actual values of rudder angle.
