L'invention a pour objets un procédé et un système pour modifier la propulsion d'un navire, laquelle propulsion est assurée par au moins une ligne d'arbre comprenant : - une hélice à pas variable solidaire d'un arbre d'hélice, - deux moteurs comprenant chacun un arbre moteur. Le navire navigue initialement dans une configuration où : - les groupes électrogènes fournissent l'énergie électrique, - un seul moteur par ligne d'arbre est activé pour fournir l'énergie propulsive, La puissance initiale développée par ledit moteur activé, en fonction de la valeur initiale du pas d'hélice et de la vitesse nominale de rotation de l'arbre moteur dudit moteur activé, génère une vitesse de croisière initiale du navire. Dans cette configuration de navigation, on émet de nouvelles consignes de commandes adaptées pour régler : - un nouveau pas d'hélice qui augmente le couple sur l'arbre d'hélice, - une nouvelle vitesse de rotation de l'arbre moteur du moteur activé qui est inférieure à la vitesse nominale de rotation dudit arbre moteur.
