[Classes 80(i) and 80(ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] In variable-ratio gearing, for an electricity payment meter, of the kind wherein an intermittent rotation is imparted to toothed-wheels 6, 7, carried planet-wise on a continuously rotating driving carrier 5 and engaging a driven member, not shown, by thrusting into the path of the wheels a variable number of stationary spring- detracted abutment plungers 3, 4 arranged in two separate concentric circles to co-act with the two wheels 6, 7 such thrusting is effected by applying to the projecting heads of the plungers a mask-plate 18 having two concentric rows of selectively-positioned apertures 18a, which admit the heads of those plungers which are not required to operate whilst the remainder are thrust into the operative position by the unapertured part of the mask-plate. The maskplate 18 is retained in the operative position by a snap-closed hinged cover-plate 11, on which it is located by projections 14, 15, engaging holes 19, 20 in the mask. The cover-plate has two complete concentric series of holes 12, 13, to admit those plungers which pass through the maskholes. The outer circle of abutment plungers control a pence wheel and the inner a shillings wheel, and the mask-plate may be in the form of a card bearing an indication 22 of its price-setting, exposed through a window in the cover 11. A single maskplate may carry four different complete sets of apertures rendered effective by selectively locating the plate in the cover; separate superposed plates may be used for shillings and pence, and each such plate may cover a number of values and be adjustable relatively to each other to provide any required price setting.
