[Class 39 (i)] A photo-electric cell has the first stage 4 of an electron multiplier disposed behind a central aperture 3 in a concave photo-electric cathode 2 of large light - gathering area and a light and electron pervious part 6 of electrode 4 extending through the aperture to the photo-sensitive side of the cathode to accelerate photo-electrons towards the multiplier without obstructing the light. The perforate portion 6 may be of cylindrical configuration and at about 100 volts positive to the cathode, and the cathode may be provided with an electrical screen 9 supported by its peripheral edge.
