Abstract

Solid mono-calcium citrate dihydrate is prepared by mixing one mole. of solid calcium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate with at least two moles. of anhydrous or hydrated citric acid and only sufficient water to provide a fluid paste whereby reaction ensues with the generation of heat, the mixture being transformed into a solid cake of mono-calcium citrate dihydrate and any excess of citric acid over said two moles. To obtain a wholly water-soluble product a proportion of at least 2.1 moles. of citric acid is used. The cake of calcium citrate may be freed from water or excess citric acid or both by treatment with a non-aqueous organic solvent in which the citrate is insoluble, for example, acetone, methyl to amyl alcohols and various ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers. The calcium citrate may be used in baking powders and pharmaceutical remedies (see Group VI). Examples describe the preparation of calcium citrate with or without citric acid by mixing 1 mol. calcium carbonate and varying amounts from 2 to 3.1 moles. of anhydrous citric acid with water to form a paste and drying the resulting cake, substantially pure mono-calcium citrate being obtained by retracting excess citric acid, when present, with acetone.ALSO:Internal remedies comprise mono-calcium citrate dihydrate, with or without citric acid, and a salt of carbonic acid, for example, sodium bicarbonate, alone or with an acidic phosphate such as calcium phosphate. The compositions give effervescent solutions in water. The monocalcium citrate dihydrate, whose preparation is described (see Group IV), may be used alone or with citric acid as a baking powder component. Specifications 597,937 and 597,938 are referred to.
