Abstract

1,242,135. Catalyst compositions. NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SPIRTOV I IORGANICHESKIKH PRODUKTOV. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 39997/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprises trilithium orthophosphate (Li 3 PO 4 ) and a filler which is asbestos or talc or pumice. The filler may constitute from 10 to 40 per cent by weight of the composition when asbestos, from 20 to 60 percent by weight of the composition when talc and from 20 to 35 per cent by weight of the composition when pumice. The catalyst composition may be prepared by precipitating trilithium orthophosphate from an aqueous solution containing a lithium salt or lithium hydroxide in the presence of excess alkali by for example trisodium orthophosphate dodecahydrate, mixing the precipitated trilithuim orthophosphate with filler, washing the resulting mixture and compacting and drying the washed mixture. The composition may be compacted by moulding into spheres having a diameter of 3 mm, which spheres may be dried, initially at ambient temperature and then at a temperature rising to 200‹C, over 10 hours. The filler may be mixed with the trilithium orthophosphate during precipitation thereof. Prior to being mixed with the trilithium orthophosphate, the filler may be treated with an inorganic acid, for example nitric acid, and thereafter washed with water, the acid used being an acid which does not form insoluble salts with compounds present as impurities in the filler; such pretreatment with acid is not necessary if the filler is of high purity, for example if the filler is pharmaceutical grade talc. Chrysotile is the preferred form of asbestos. The filler may be used in the form of a powder having a particle size not less than 60 (Tyler) mesh. The catalyst composition may be used in the preparation of allyl alcohol from propylene oxide by molecular rearrangement. Reference is made in the specification to a known catalyst composition comprising trilithium orthophosphate and a filler which is active carbon or diatomaceous earth.
