[Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A regulating means for limiting the delivery of a pump when the delivery pressure exceeds a predetermined value, comprises a delivery chamber with a movable wall, the latter carrying the delivery valve and being acted on by the pump pressure to move against the action of a spring to provide free communication between the delivery chamber and the pumping chamber when the pressure exceeds the predetermined value. A double-acting pump comprises a piston 124 reciprocated by an eccentric portion 130 of the driving shaft which engages with a cylindrical member 132. Liquid enters an annular groove 158 in the piston 124 and passes through passages 160 to a chamber 162 and thence through an inlet valve 164 to a working chamber 210. One Wall of the chamber 210 is comprised by an outlet valve 174 having a flange 176 which seats on an annular gasket 178 which may be of fibre or neoprene. A diaphragm 180 is secured to the outlet valve by a rivet 182 and is clamped at its outer circumference between the main pump body and a cap 190. The outlet valve is closed by a spring 194. The chamber 192 between the cap 190 and the diaphragm 180 may be at atmospheric or supercharger pressure. After passing through the outlet valve to a chamber 188, liquid is discharged through passage 198 to an outlet 200. When the rate of flow is below the maximum, the outlet valve oscillates to and fro to accommodate the difference between the pump displacement and the volume of flow. The outlet valve may be byepassed by a passage 204 provided with a spring-pressed ball' valve 206 adapted to open at a lower pressure than the outlet valve in order to facilitate the escape of air at starting. Any liquid which escapes through the shaft seal 148 may be drained off through an outlet 150.
