[Class 83 (iv)] A tool for expanding the ends of tubes comprises rollers g whose axes are laterally inclined to the tool shank a and which are arranged in a cage so that one end can move radially outwards, the radial movement being limited by a sleeve surrounding one end of the rollers, but slidable axially against spring action to de-restrict this outward movement. The cage is formed in two halves c, d and carried between bearings b, e ; the former being journalled in a flange j of the shank and the latter in a nut f screwed to the forward end. The rollers have a slight taper at their forward ends h and their rear ends are covered by an extension sleeve p carried on a sleeve k, which is urged forward by a spring m interposed between it and a collar n fast on shank a. A roller bearing may be interposed between the sleeve and the spring, and coolant may be admitted through an adaptor q to a duct s and passages t extending therefrom into contact with the rollers. The abutting ends of the cage c, d may be joined by pins in one part engaging in blind holes axially arranged in the other part. In operation the rollers screw themselves into the tube which is rotated and eventually the end of the tube abuts the extension sleeve p moving it against the action of spring m to allow the rollers to enter the tube to their full extent. The rotation of the tube is then reversed to remove the tool.
