Abstract
597,089. Glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Sept. 26, 1944, No. 18372. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] [Also in Group XX] Comprises a photo-sensitive glass containing a small amount of gold as sensitizing agent and also either CeO2 not exceeding 0.05 per cent or SnO2 not exceeding 0.02 per cent and which remains colourless when heated except after exposure to ultra-violet radiations. In particular, the amount of gold present may be 0.01-0.03 per cent of the batch. Oxidizing agents such as Na- or KnO3 may be present, also one or more oxides of the metals of the second periodic group except Cd, Hg or Ra, but reducing agents should be avoided. After exposure to ultra-violet radiations, on subsequent reheating (to about 550 C.) the irradiated portion of the glass undergoes colour changes from light blue to purple or red according to the amount of exposure and/or heating. Thus, by interposing a mask between the source of radiation and the glass a coloured pattern, cartoon, sketch, picture, &c. may be formed in the glass. One such mask may be used merely to form a coloured strip around a glass sheet ; a second mask, which may be a photographic portrait negative, may then be used within the already irradiated strip so that on subsequent heating of the sheet a positive picture of one colour is formed in the glass within a differently coloured frame. As the negative may not allow sufficient ultra-violet light to pass, the emulsion may be formed directly on the glass on which the positive is to be developed. A graticule may be formed by making an enlarged drawing of the cross hairs, photographing the drawing to form a negative on a greatly reduced scale and then using this negative to transfer a positive photographic image to a glass disc made from the above glass.
