Abstract

392,938. Photo-reliefs ; heat-development processes. KODAK, Ltd., Kodak House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Sheppard, S. E. and Vanselow, W. ; Kodak Park. Rochester, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 26, 1931, No. 32781. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1930. [Class 98 (ii).] Relates to the formation of reliefs by heat development of an exposed colloid layer containing light-sensitive metal compounds, reference being made to Specifications 323,768, [Class 98 (ii), Photographic processes &c.], and 390,881. According to the present invention, the light sensitive coating contains at least 50 per cent of colloid (e.g. gelatin or albumen) and a light sensitive metal compound which on exposure gives a highly visible image as well as a latent relief image, the relief being developed by heat treatment. Di-carboxylic compounds of silver, lead, mercury and manganese are preferred. Tribasic acid compounds, e.g. critic acid, and compounds such as silver formate, lead formate and lead thioacetate are also mentioned. Two particular examples are given, viz. : (1) gelatin having incorporated therein silver nitrate and potassium oxalate ; (2) gelatin having incorporated therein potassium oxalate and a mercurous nitrate solution containing concentrated nitric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (1) a " photo-thermographic " composition produced by dispersing dry and finely divided silver oxalate in a lacquer (e.g. formed from one of the phenol-formaldehyde condensation products), which yields on exposure through a positive a slightly visible image which can be further developed out by heat treatment-; (2) alternative carriers for " photo-thermographic " compositions, including agar, casein, albumen, zeine, cellulose esters, resins and siliceous enamel and glaze ; (3) the production of images having a surface texture differing from that of the background (e.g. different granularity and porosity); (4) the use of such images as photo-mechanical printing surfaces ; (5) ceramic decoration by burning in images produced by heat development. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
