Abstract
636,151. Photo-sensitive glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33148. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1943. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A transparent glass which becomes opacified on heating (to 500-600 C.) contains fluorine and copper, silver or gold in amounts equivalent to .01-1 per cent Cu 2 O, .05-.3 per cent AgCl and .01-.03 per cent Au. The glass is also thermosensitive in that if, before it is heated, it is exposed to short-wave radiations, e.g. ultraviolet, a colour develops on heating. The colour developed depends on the sensitizing agent (Cu, Ag or Au), the time and intensity of the irradiation and the time and temperature of the heating and ranges from blue, lavender, purple, maroon, to yellow, amber and red. By masking portions of the glass during irradiation an opacified pattern in colour on an uncoloured opacified background develops on heating; the mask may be a photographic negative in. which case there is formed in the glass a heat-developed coloured photographic image on an opacified background like a positive print. The negative emulsion should be on u.v.-transmitting glass or directly on the glass in which the positive image is to be developed. Examples of batches are given; they include s odium-silico- or alumino-fluoride as the opacifying agent and some include one or more of the following: Ce0 2 , BaC0 3 , SrC0 3 , ZnO and SnO 2 . A reducing agent is added to the batches for the copper glasses and an oxidizing agent may be added to the batches for the gold and silver glasses. The glasses may contain Au and Ag together, but not Cu with Au and/or Ag.
