Abstract
596,696. Gas turbines, FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd, and FORSYTH, A. G. Oct. 24, 1945, No. 28073. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] Steam generated in a cooling jacket of a gas turbine is used as a separate driving fluid in the turbine. The steam and some of' the vapour resulting from combustion are condensed and returned to the initial water reservoir. In the plant shown, a pump 56 takes water from a reservoir 55 and delivers it to the rear end of a helical water channel 59 in the turbine casing 58. The pump is regulated to transmit the amount of water that will evaporate in the channel 59 and the resultant steam is received within a chamber 62. The steam passes through a perforated wall 63 into a header 65 and to spaces 67 in the walls of the combustion chambers 21. The steam is superheated there and then passes through nozzles 69, which alternate with the combustion chambers, to the turbine blading. The turbine exhaust goes through an air-cooled heat-exchanger 70, where the steam is condensed. The water is extracted by a pump 79 and returned to the reservoir 55. The turbine blades 17 and the outer blades 15 of a contrarotating compressor are mounted on a drum 14, connected to a shaft 50, which drives an airscrew 33 through an epicyclic reduction gear 46. The shaft 10, carrying the inner blades 13 of the compressor may be held stationary or geared to run oppositely to the drum 14 by means of a clutch 53.
