Abstract
Readily fusible solids such as naphthalene, phenol and anthracene are freed from volatile impurities by introducing the solid and an auxiliary liquid into a distillation column, the liquid having a lower boiling point than the solid and being miscible therewith; and distilling in such a manner that the p auxiliary liquid distils and refluxes in a closed circuit, while the purified substance is taken off in the liquid state from one of the plates of the column, where it is free from admixture with the auxiliary liquid. The liquid may be mixed beforehand with the solid or it may be introduced separately into the head of the column. Benzene or a light oil boiling up to 180 DEG C. may be used in the purification of anthracene.
