Abstract

596,371. Epicyclic gear. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. July 25, 1944, No. 14205. Convention date, July 1, 1943. [Class 80(i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A two-stage epicyclic reduction-gear, between aligned vertical driving and driven shafts 5, 8, driving the sustaining-rotor of a helicopter, is provided with a power takeoff shaft 11, bevel driven from the planetcarrier 53 of the first gear-stage, for driving the stabilising - rotor. The two gear-stages have a common fixed reaction ring-gear 69, the sun 43 of the first stage being driven from the driving shaft 5 through a one-way clutch 47, whilst the sun 54 of the second stage is integral with the carrier 53 of the first stage. The carrier 73 of the second stage is splined to the final driven shaft 8. The gear is lubricated by a pump 20 on the lower end of the driving shaft 5, which draws oil through a filter 18 from a sump 17 and feeds it to the hollow shafts 5, 8, which have radial ports supplying the gears. A closure-plug 85 in the driven shaft 8 limits the oil-level therein.
