595,699. Unwinding foil &c. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 18, 1945, No. 12534. Convention date, May 18, 1944, [Class 120 (ii)] A tensioning device for controlling the unwinding of thin strip material, particularly thin foil which with lengths of paper 252, is to be wound into an electrical condenser, comprises a mandrel 220 for the material 227 to be unwound, bearings 214, 217 at opposite ends of the mandrel, one of said bearings being provided at one end of a supporting member 203 which at its other end pivots against a fulcrum 209, and resilient means 233 acting on the member 203 intermediate the ends thereof in such a way that the bearing 214 carried by the member can exert an axial pressure on the mandrel to exert a frictional drag thereon. The front and back members 203, 202 are supported on a rod 208, the fulcrum collar 209 being attached thereto by a set screw 210. The back plate. 202 carries a housing 215 for the pivot 217 which may be oiled at 218. The front pivot 214 is received in an aperture 212 in the plate 203. Adjustment of the nut 232 on the rod 24 varies the spring compression at 233 and, therefore, the frictional drag at the pivot 214. The collar 209 may be turned to vary the fulcrum point of the plate 203. Adjustment of the nut 230 moves the roll 227 in relation to the paper strip 252. For loading or unloading mandrels, the member 207 is moved away from. the plate 202, against spring pressure at 233, and then turned to free. the member 203 from rods 208, 205.
