Abstract

595,385. Drilling; work-holders. JOHNSON, W. G., and FORWARD, H. June 8, 1945, No. 14605. [Class 83 (iii)] A clamp, which may be used for securing the portable boring machine described in Specification 595,383 to a cylinder block being bored, comprises a body formed of members 13, 14 where - of the former has longitudinal channels 15, 16. A sprocket 18 is journalled on a pin 19 in the body so as to project into both channels and engage with a chain 24 in channel 16, the sprocket being rotatable by a rack or a series of parallel pins 21 slidable in channel 15. The pins are carried by a block 20 which is slidable by a toggle linkage or by a handoperated screw 22 acting through a shock absorber 29. The body, which is secured together by bolts 26, is inserted in a housing 10 in the base 11 of the boring machine so as to project through a T-slot 12 therein with a clamping face 9 engaging the shoulders of the T-slot, and on rotation of the screw 22 the chain 24 is moved to cause a stepped pad 27 attached thereto to engage the base of a cylinder block and clamp the machine thereon. The pad 27 may be tilted about the chain to pass through a bore in the cylinder block.
