Abstract
595,359. Gear-cutting. LAESSER, E. May 15, 1944, No. 9310. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 30, 1944.] [Class 83 (iii)] A planing-machine for gear-cutting has a rack-tool 15 mounted in a pivoted carrier 14 on a ram 7 so that the cutter may be made to cut on both directions of the ram reciprocation or may be made to cut in one direction only and be relieved in the other direction. A pinion 29 on the ram engages a fixed rack 30 and has a friction connection 27 with a linkage 21, 26 acting on a slide 18 having a tooth 17 engaging a notch in the tool holder 14 so that for double cutting, the holder will be swung at the commencement of the stroke to put the tool in cutting position, a fixed stop 32 on the ram then engaging the appropriate side of a notch 31 in the holder to locate the tool in cutting position and the friction drive 27 slipping for the rest of the stroke. A pin 34 eccentrically mounted on the end of a handle 33 on the ram is then in a middle position so as not to engage either end of a slot 35 in the slide 18, but if the handle is rotated to bring the pin 34 towards one end or the other of the slot 35 oscillation of the holder 14 in one direction will be limited and the tool will then cut in one direction and be relieved in the other direction. The ram is reciprocated by a crank drive 8.
