595,230. Gun turrets. RICE, E. A. B., ROSE, A. G., NICHOLLS, K. H., CURTIS, S., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. July 3, 1945, No. 16890. [Class 92 (i)] A gun turret, in which the sight is carried by an arm mounted on the turret framework for pivotal movement about axes of training and elevation, is prevented from vibrating when the guns are fired by means of a friction member which is connected to the turret and is arranged to be urged into contact with a similar surface on a rigid reaction member. As applied to the aircraft gun turret described in Specification 577,904 wherein the sighting arm is mounted on a member 11 carried by a bearing 12 in the turret framework 13, the rigid reaction member 14 is attached to a bracket 16 which is secured rigidly to the fuselage of the aircraft. The upper surface of the member 14 and the lower surface of a flange 19 screwed thereto act as friction surfaces against which bear respectively a member 27 and a friction disc 21 both connected to a stud 23 which extends coaxially with the bearing 12 of member 11. A spring 28 urges the friction surfaces into mutual contact, and a rod 24 by engaging in a fixed bracket 26 and in the bracket 22 carrying the disc 21 prevents rotation of the stud 23.
