Abstract

577,919. Gun mountings; sights. RICE, E. A. B., ROSE, A. G., NICHOLLS, K. H., CURTIS, S., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. April 1, 1944, No. 6104. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to gun mountings of the kind in which the pivotal movement of the guns 11 is controlled by a sighting arm 24, movement of which brings into operation follow-up mechanism which causes the guns to move substantially as one with the sighting arm. According to the invention the sight 26 is pivotally mounted on the arm 24 about an axis 28 normal to the line of sight, and means are provided for imparting to the sight an angular movement about axis 28 to compensate for any training movement that arm 24 may make before the guns commence their training movement, such compensating movement varying from a maximum, when the line of sight lies normal. to the training axis, to zero when it lies parallel to the training axis. The mechanism shown is similar to that described in Specification 577,908, comprising as in that Specification link mechanism 41, 42, 43 connecting the sight carrying ring 39 to a twoarmed pivoted lever 47, 48 pivoted on an operating member 22 upon which arm 24 is pivotally mounted. Lever 43 has a slot 46 which receives a roller 45 on arm 47, and it is the provision of this slot which affects the varying compensating movements imparted to the sight for different positions in elevation of the sighting arm. The arm 48 is slotted for engagement with a roller 49 mounted on an arm 50 about an axis which extends radially from the training axis. When arm 24 is moved in training, carrying the operating member 22 with it, and during the period of lag, that is before member 22 operates a valve 16 for moving the turret and guns in azimuth, the lever 47, 48 rocks about its pivot and thereby effects the required compensating movement of the sight. Specifications 576,621 and 577,904 also are referred to.
