Abstract

581,937. Gun sights for aircraft. RICE, E. A. B., ROSE, A. G., NICHOLLS, K. H., CURTIS, S., WAITE, L. W., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. April 1, 1944, No. 6106. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to sighting devices for gun mountings of the kind described in Specifications 577,908 and 577,919, wherein a sighting arm 11 operates follow-up mechanisms for moving the guns and wherein the sight 12 which is pivotally mounted on the arm is given a compensating movement for any movement the arm may make before the follow-up mechanism operates. According to the invention, means operable in synchronism with the firing mechanism are provided for restraining the sight from pivotal movement on the arm 11 during the firing of the guns. In the construction shown, the arm 11, as in Specification 577,919, is pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis on a member 16 which is pivotally mounted about the training axis of an aircraft turret 17, and the compensating movement in training is imparted to the sight by links 19, 42, 32, 33. When a button 31 is depressed to actuate the firing solenoids of the guns, a further solenoid 39 in the circuit actuates arm 38 of a two-armed lever 37, 38 and causes a member 36 on arm 37 to descend and to clamp link 42 between it and a fixed gripping member 34. The clamping mechanism and solenoid 39 are mounted on arm 11. The clamping of link 42 prevents the sight moving about the training axis on arm 11 during firing. A similar clamping mechanism controlled by another solenoid prevents the sight from moving about axis 13 when the firing button 31 is depressed.
