Abstract

578,756. Aircraft gun turrets. RICE, E. A. B., ROSE, A. G., C U R T I S, S., NICHOLLS, K. H., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Nov. 18, 1943, No. 19260. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to gun mountings of the type in which pivotal movement of the gun or guns, such as the guns 11 in the construction shown, is controlled by a sighting arm 27 adapted, when moved, to bring into operation power actuated mechanism, such as oil motors 19, which causes the gun or guns to move substantially as one with the sighting arm. According to the invention the sighting arm is connected to controlling mechanism 21 of the power-actuated elevation mechanism 19 by means comprising an operating link 29 forming a part of a parallel motion linkage connecting arm 27 with an intermediate device 31, 32 pivoting about an axis parallel to the elevating axis of the guns. The device 31, 32, is connected by further parallel motion linkage 37 to an actuating member 36 freely mounted about the elevation axis of the guns and connected, by a link 41 and arm 42 for example, to the controlling mechanism 21. The link 29 is disposed with its axis substantially parallel to the training axis of the guns. By the above arrangement the danger of the controlling mechanism 21 being actuated upon initial training movement of the sighting arm is avoided. In the construction shown, the invention is applied to the gun turret forming the subject of Specification 577,904 wherein the guns 11 are mounted on bearing members 14 attached to the rotatable platform 16 of an aircraft turret. The arm 27 carrying sight 30 is U-shape in plan and is pivoted at 26, adjacent the end of each limb, on an operating member 24 which moves about the training axis of the turret. Movement of the sight, and hence of member 24, in training actuates a valve 22 controlling an oil motor for rotating the platform. Movement of the arm about axis 26 in elevation actuates motors 19 through controlling mechanism 21 as described above. The device 31, 32, which is in the form of a two armed pivoted lever, has its arm 31 of the same radius as the arm connecting link 29 with the sighting arm, while the link 37, when in its neutral position, has its centre line disposed as a common tangent to the, ares of movement of the pivotal points at which it is connected to member 36 and arm 32. The Provisional Specification refers' also to Specification 576,621.
