Abstract
594,822. Framed buildings; walls; roofs. ROBERTS, J. A. Oct. 23, 1944, Nos. 20497/44 and 11656/45. [Classes 20(i), 20(iii) and 20(iv)] Frame members, comprising a post portion 17 and a roof beam portion 18, for buildings such as glasshouses and garages, of the kind in which the walls and roof are formed of glass or other sheets carried by such frame members and by carrier or glazing bars arranged between them, are formed with rebates 47, 52 along each edge of the outwardly-directed faces of both the post and beam portions to receive the edges of the covering sheets, the rebates being of such depth that the sheets lie substantially flush with the outer faces of the frame members. Similar rebates 80 may be formed at the edges of the inwardly directed faces of the members to receive the edges of the sheets 66 forming the end walls of the building. The frame members may, as shown, be formed of reinforced concrete, and the section of either the post or the beam portion, or both, may be of greater width at or near the inner face than at or near the outer face, as claimed in Specification 594,875. The post and beam portions may be separate and connected by a bolted scarfed joint. They are secured at 21 and 22 for the reception of pre-cast eaves units 5 and ridge units 6 respectively, which are both provided with depending lugs which are bolted to the side faces of the frame members. The joints are given a degree of flexibility by forming one of the members with an upstanding portion providing a contact face of reduced area. The eaves unit, Fig. 40, is formed with a web 42 which is rebated for the glazing sheets 1 and formed with recesses in which the upper ends of the side glazing bars 10 are bolted. The ridge unit, Fig. 31, is of T- section, the edges of the flanges being recessed for the ends of the roof glazing bars 9 and rebated for the edges of the glass sheets 2. The lower edges of these sheets are secured by putty or the like to the upper face of a rib 43 on the eaves unit. The lower portions of the end and side walls are formed by dwarf pre-cast units, 64, Figs. 7 and 17, which have cavitied inner faces and are bolted at their ends to the frame members 17. These joints may be made flexible in the same manner as those between the frame members and eaves and ridge units. The outer faces of the frame members may be formed with dovetail recesses for wood, &c., insets to enable the glass, &c., sheets to be held by nails while placing them in position.
