Abstract
594,396. Variable - pitch propellers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1943, No. 282. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1940. [Class 114] In a variable-pitch propeller the pitch of all the blades is changed simultaneously by an annular rotatable member having means for adjustably connecting it to each of a number of concentric arcuate sectional members connected to the blades so that the pitch angles of the blades can be adjusted with respect to each other. In the form shown, a gear element 22 on the root of each blade 12 meshes with one section of a gear 26 which is common to all the blades and has its sections slightly spaced apart. The gear 26 is rotatably supported in a bearing 28 which is retained against axial movement by a pair of annular pitch limit stops 34, 36 which are splined at 70 into the hub 10, a hub closure member 38 and a nut 40. The assembly also includes an annular member 44 with an enlarged portion 48 within the stops 34, 36, and a reduced portion 46 between the shaft 16 and a reduced portion 53 of the gear 26. The inner and outer surfaces of the portions 53, 46 are serrated to receive connecting elements 52, 54, 56 which are serrated on both sides in such a manner as to provide a vernier adjustment of each of them. The portion 48 of the member 44 has lugs 58, 60, 62, 64 which co-operate with lugs 66, 68 on the stops 34, 36 to positively limit the pitch-changing movements. The latter may be effected by means of a hydraulic vane motor, or by means of a cam operated by a single electric or hydraulic motor as described in Specifications 505,077, 505,168 and 505,169.
