Abstract

593,417. Lubricating. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., and PILKINGTON, V. W. Sept. 20, 1944, No. 17966. [Class 12 (iii)] In a lubricating system for a road vehicle internal-combustion engine in which the inlet pipe to the oil pump has a pivoting pipe connection to a float so that it draws from the upper level of the oil in the sump and, if desired, through a filter arranged in the float, the pipe connection to the float also actuates a valve to allow replenishment of the oil in the sump from a separate container when the oil level falls in the sump. The separate container may be housed in an enclosure provided on the wing of one of the front wheels of the vehicle for ready accessibility in re-filling; a float level indicator may be fitted. A float-filter 20, the pipe arm 19 of which is pivotally connected to the fixed inlet pipe 13 of the lubrication pump by a right-angle tube piece 15 entering a cross piece on the fixed inlet pipe 13, is modified to provide the required valve; this is effected by cutting a part-peripheral groove 25 externally on the right-angle tube piece 15 which groove connects, when the float descends, two ports formed in the cross-piece 14, one port 24 being directly open to the sump and the other 23 open to a feed pipe 10 coming from the separate container. The oil drawn from the sump through the float-filter 20 and pipe arm 19 passes to the interior of the tube piece 15 and thence passes by an open port to the fixed inlet pipe 13.
