Abstract

428,495. Lubricating. TAYLOR, R. C., 86, London Street, Greenwich, London. April 5, 1934, No. 10370. [Class 12 (iii)] In a lubricating system air is drawn from atmosphere through powdered graphite contained in a receptacle 5 so that the graphite is suspended in and carried by the air to the parts requiring lubrication entirely by the effect of suction. As shown, for the lubrication of the cylinders of an automobile, the receptacle 5 of glass has a cover 8 integral with a frame 6 secured to the engine dash, the frame having a pivoted stirrup 13 with a screw 15 to clamp the receptacle 5 in place, a washer 10 being interposed. The base of the receptacle 5 is preferably hemispherical. A rib 19 on the cover 8 has an air inlet passage 20 with a tube 22 extending below the level of the graphite, and a tube 26 from the upper part of the receptacle leads to the engine intake manifold 29 between the throttle valve 30 and the engine cylinders. The inlet passage 20 has an adjustable needle valve 21, or the valve may be fitted to the pipe 26. Air drawn through the passage 20 and pipe 22 produces, in the receptacle 5, a cloud of graphite which passes to the engine cylinders during the suction strokes. To indicate upon adjustment of the valve 21 when a cloud of the correct density is obtained in the receptacle 5, a shaded card for comparison may be attached to or near the lubricator. To show the cloud clearly the receptacle 5 may be provided with a light opaque background.
