Abstract

606,039. Lubricating systems for internalcombustion engines. ALLAM, P. S. (Fram Corporation). Jan. 9, 1946, No. 751. [Class 12 (iii)] In a lubricating system for an internalcombustion engine, the engine casing is formed with a part on which is mounted a casing containing a filter cartridge, the casing having inlet and outlet ports continuously open while the oil is circulating under pump pressure, whereby oil flows unrestrictedly through the casing to the user conduit, but with some oil passing through the filter cartridge to return direct to the sump. A pump 22, immersed in the oil in a sump provided by an oil pan 12 attached to the engine and crank-case bloc 10, 11, circulates oil through a conduit 18 bored in a protruding part 14 formed on the engine and crank-case bloc 10, 11 to a filter-containing casing 35 secured on such protruding part 14 by bolts 38 passing through the bottom wall of the casing 35. The oil enters by a stand-pipe 43 reaching to the top of the casing so that the filter cartridge 45 is surrounded by oil under pressure, whereby some oil passes through and is filtered by the cartridge to return direct to the sump 12 by the central discharge tube 31 of the cartridge which opens direct to the crank-casing while the remainder of the oil passes to the user manifold 26 through a conduit 28 in the protruding part 14 from an outlet port of the casing 35 provided with a spring-loaded valve 29 which is open so long as the oil in the casing is circulating under pressure. The protruding part also includes a conduit 25 branching from the inlet conduit 18 to the filter casing and leading direct to the user manifold 26 so that this conduit 25 provides a parallel flow path.
