Abstract

512,991. Valves. CARTER, B. C. March 25, 1938, No. 9112. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a lubricating system of the dry sump type oil is bye-passed from the delivery side of a scavenge pump 5 to a vessel 2 from which the pump 5 is supplied, the rate of flow in the byepass 10 being controlled by the oil level in the vessel 2 so as to maintain the oil level sufficiently above the outlet 4 to prevent the pump 5 drawing in air with the oil. As shown, the bye-pass is located between a filter 6 and a cooler 7, the pump 5 normally discharging through a non-return valve 11 to a tank 8. A lubricating pump 9 draws from the tank 8 and supplies the engine 1. The flow through the byepass 10 is controlled by a float controlled piston valve 12 arranged to cut off the flow when the oil level in the vessel 2 reaches a predetermined limit. The valve 12 has a piston 14 controlling outlet ports 17 and a balancing piston 13. Upward movement of the valve is limited by a flange 20. Means for damping the movement of the valve 12 may be provided. The bye-passed oil may flow into the vessel 2 below the oil level therein or may pass to the suction side of the pump 5. In a modification the bye-pass valve may be coupled to one or more diaphragms forming a bellows one side of which is subjected to constant air or oil pressure and the other side of which is subjected to the oil pressure corresponding to the head of oil above the bellows.
