Abstract

A dry pulverulent copper soap is produced by reacting together in aqueous solutions alkali hydroxide, an alkali salt of at least one water-insoluble, non-volatile aliphatic or aromatic acid capable of producing a water-insoluble pulverulent hydroxy copper soap, and sufficient quantity of an inorganic water-soluble copper salt to react completely with the alkali salt and alkali hydroxide, and thereafter removing water and by-product salts. At least one of the acids is monobasic and may be a cyclic-acid such as naphthenic acid. The acids specified are oleic, stearic, cocoanut, benzoic, phthalic and 2-ethylhexoic acids, Congo resin and hydrogenated rosin (Staybelite resin), and these may enter into the reaction alone or together with naphthenic acid. Tall-oil and rosin acids may also be used but only in conjunction with one or more antioxidants for the copper soap, e.g., alpha naphthol and alkyl phenols, which may also be used with the other acids. Specification 507,361 is referred to.ALSO:A fungicide, comprising a dry pulverulent hydroxy copper soap, is produced by reacting together in aqueous solutions alkali hydroxide, an alkali salt of at least one water-insoluble, non-volatile aliphatic or aromatic acid capable of producing a water-insoluble pulverulent hydroxy copper soap, and sufficient quantity of an inorganic water-soluble copper salt to react completely with the alkali salt and alkali hydroxide, and thereafter removing water and by-product salts. At least one of the acids is monobasic and may be a cyclic-acid such as naphthenic acid.
