Abstract

A weed killer comprises a mahogany soap in admixture with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid linked to a nuclear aromatic radical, or with the alkali metal or ammonium salts or amides, thioamides or lower alkyl esters thereof, the admixture preferably constituting 5-10 per cent of the composition. The compounds specified are the phenyl, phenoxy, phenyl-mercapto, phenylimino, naphthyl, naphthoxy, naphthylimino, anthracyl or fluorene derivatives of aliphatic acids having from 2 to 9 carbon atoms. The aromatic nucleus may contain one or more substituents such as halogen, particularly chlorine, OH, NH2, HSO3, NO2 or the simpler alkyl groups such as CH3, C2H5 and C6H7. Examples are given of 0.1 per cent aqueous emulsions of naphthalene-1-acetic acid, potassium phenyl acetate, 1-naphthyl butyric acid, 2.4.5-trichlorophenoxy acetic acid and 2.4-dichlorophenoxy acetamide in 10 parts of mahogany soap. To prevent the breaking of the emulsion in hard water 1 per cent sodium pyrophosphate may be added. Other weed killers (not specified) may be incorporated in the above compositions.
