Abstract
593,016. Musical drums &c. DALLAS & SONS, Ltd., J. E., and PERCY, C. W. Jan. 18, 1946, No. 19809/47. Divided out of Complete Specification of 592,979. [Class 88 (ii)] In a percussion instrument such as a drum or tympano, the vellum 22 is tensioned by an axially slidable but non-rotatable annular bearing member 28 mounted within the shell 21. The vellum is held by a captive vellum hoop 26 and a counter hoop 24 secured to the shell by screws 21<1>. A thrust member 31 is rotated by a ratchet and gear mechanism operated by the knob 34, but' is restricted against axial movement by spacing bars 32. Inclined surfaces 33 on the thrust member engage similar surfaces 30 on the bearing member so as to increase or decrease the tension of the vellum according to the direction of rotation of the thrust member. An independent mechanism operated by the knob 42 may be provided for the second vellum 23. Pawls (not shown) are provided to hold the actuating mechanisms in their adjusted positions. Alternatively, the gears may include a worm and a worm-wheel. One actuating knob may be arranged to tension both vellums simultaneously.
