590,803. Musical drums. DALLAS & SONS, Ltd., J. E., and PERCY, C. W. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2882. [Class 88 (ii)] In a percussion musical instrument in which pedal-operated mechamism is provided for adjusting the tension of the vellum 13, Fig. 6, the motion-transmitting means operated by the pedal 10 includes a locking device having two slide members 24, Fig. 2, between which a wedge member 22 is disposed, arranged between parallel guides 26 secured to the casing 9. When a pull is exerted on the wedge 22 by the vellum tension, by means of the hoop 49 (Fig. 6), rods 51 and 53, spindle 14 (Fig. 1) and chain 15, the wedge locks the slide members 24 against the guides 26 and the tension is maintained. A pull on the wedge exerted by the foot tread 10 loosens the wedge between the slide members and moves the wedge and slide members as a whole to increase the tension, sudden removal of the prossure on the foot tread serving to effect locking under the control of the vellum tension, while gradual release allows the slides to move in the other direction under the control of the vellum tension to reduce the tension. A modified form of locking device is described (Fig. 5, not shown) which includes pawls to effect release after locking.
